Pompton Lakes Dam Update
|
|
At a meeting this week between
the Army Corps of Engineers, NJ
Department of Environmental
Protection and several borough
officials, the operation of the
gates was the key focus. The
meeting was well over 2 hours.
We have been told ... again... that the
software which controls the
operation of the gates has been
identified as the source of the
problems and will be modified
... again. We were further told
that the gates currently open
and close at 6 inch increments
and this will be changed to a 3
inch initial opening and final
closing in an attempt to smooth
out the flow of water. The plan
is to modify the software in
March.
I participated in the meeting as Liaison to the Flood
Advisory Board and brought up
the subject of the log removal
at the dam. After a lengthy and
very contentious discussion, we
have received a commitment to
remove them ... again. There was
no time frame because the issue
of debris and log accumulation
at the spillway was never
considered in the planning. I
found this to be incredulous - a
federally funded project costing
over $21 million and no one
considered that logs are
lighter in weight than water and
somehow float. Since the project
was designed to modulate the
flow of water now those logs
have no natural way to proceed
and accumulate until we face an
extreme high water event and
then they will float over the
spillway with increased velocity
as projectiles at the worst
possible time.
The logs cannot currently float over the spillway
because when the water level
rises on the spillway, the gates
open to lower the level before
it reaches a point where he logs
can float over the spillway.
Congressman Bill Pascrell and state Senator Joe Pennachhio
sent representatives and will
continue to proceed at a state
and federal level to assist us
in resolving these problems.
Stay tuned for more details ...

Shade Tree Grant

Pompton Lakes has been awarded a
grant of 75 shade trees by the
New Jersey Federation of Trees.
The trees will be delivered in
the fall of 2008 and planted by
a crew from the NJ Federation of
Trees. These are the same
wonderful folks who awarded us
75 shade trees in fall of 2007
and also planted them for us.
Shade Trees provide comforting
shade in the hot weather,
beautify our streets and parks
and help increasse our property
values.
